Review

Books on Pregnancy, Parenting and the non-existent baby manuals - you have read it all. How about a book on how to read to your baby? When is the right time to start reading to your Baby? As soon as your Baby can listen! When does a Baby start listening/observing?  We all, possibly, know the answer from our childhood dose of Abhimanyu's story and what modern-day research tells us. As early as possible! But do you know what kind of books to pick at each stage? And how to read so that your Baby gets the most out of it? Baby Read Aloud Basics:Fun and Interactive Ways to Help Your Little One Discover the World of Words by Caroline J. Blakemore and Barbara Weston Ramirez has the answers.
Baby read aloud basics deals with six stages namely The Listener(0-2 months), The Observer(2-4 months), The Cooer(4-8 months), The Babbler(8-12 months), The Word Maker(12-18 months) and The Phrase Maker(18-24 months). In each stage, the book explains the step by step instructions on how to read, what type of books will be beneficial at that stage and read-aloud demonstrations and Book recommendations. This book changes the way you would read a book to your Baby, from putting your fingers on the written word as you read to talking about the pictures on the book to starting conversations. More than anything, this book makes you a better observer, you will notice when your Baby starts recognizing the print(as opposed to the images), tries to use the words that you almost forgot you have read to her/him and more.

Suggestions on how to read the book: I would suggest that you read Part 1: Why Baby Read-Aloud's benefit Your Baby's Language Development during pregnancy. You can skim through Part 2 that details the various stages and read it in detail just before you reach the stage.

  6. This redeems the logic elders give that one must have good and positive surroundings around a pregnant mom to keep the baby happy and healthy! And this book undoubtedly makes it helpful by providing tips on what good books to read at various stages of the baby's growth. A good read.

  8. Wow! Such an interesting concept for reading to children! I would have loved to read it but now my lid is older. I see a lot of logic to the stages mentioned. Also loved the idea of lisening in the womb, abhimanyanu.
